About IIM Guwahati

The Indian Institute of Management Guwahati has been established by the Government of India under the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development) in 2026 in Guwahati, Assam. It is the 22nd Indian Institute of Management to be established in India . Assam is the gateway to India’s North-East and is distinguished by its rich natural resources, cultural heritage, biodiversity, and expanding opportunities across trade, services, tourism, and entrepreneurship.

In its formative years, IIM Guwahati is guided by a clear and ambitious vision to develop management professionals and leaders capable of building high-performing organisations, grounded in ethical leadership, evidence-based decision-making, and societal value creation—while remaining attentive to the unique economic, cultural, and ecological context of the North-East.

The Mentor Institute

During its formative phase, the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati is being mentored by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. IIM Ahmedabad will guide the Institute in establishing robust academic foundations, institutional systems, and governance practices aligned with the standards of the IIM ecosystem.

Through this mentorship, IIM Guwahati is committed to building an institution that balances academic rigour with contextual relevance, and leadership development with a strong sense of public purpose.

Under the mentorship framework, IIM Ahmedabad supports IIM Guwahati in building a strong and sustainable institutional foundation during its early years. This includes guidance on academic architecture—covering programme design, curriculum frameworks, pedagogical approaches, and assessment philosophy—as well as the establishment of governance structures and academic processes such as committees, policies, regulations, and academic calendar frameworks. The mentorship also extends to quality assurance through the development of benchmarks for teaching and learning, academic integrity systems, review mechanisms, and a culture of continuous improvement.

In addition, IIM Ahmedabad provides support for capability building by mentoring faculty and administrative teams to foster a robust academic culture and institutional maturity over time. Foundational institutional systems are also shaped under this guidance, including processes related to admissions, examinations, student affairs, and administration. Beyond these, the mentorship will also encompass areas critical to a new institution’s evolution, such as faculty recruitment and development, research orientation and culture-building, student engagement frameworks, external collaborations and partnerships, branding and outreach, and the gradual development of organisational values and institutional identity aligned with the broader IIM ecosystem.

Message from Chairperson, Board of Governors

Mentor Director’s Message

The establishment of a new institution is more than the creation of a campus or the launch of an academic programme. It is an opportunity to shape ideas, nurture talent, and build a culture that will influence generations to come. It is with this sense of purpose that we are building the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati.

For over six decades, IIMs across the country have played a transformative role in nurturing future leaders, academics, and entrepreneurs, advancing impactful research, and contributing to the progress of businesses, governments, and the nation. As the 22nd IIM of the country, IIM Guwahati is proud to carry forward this rich legacy while charting its own distinctive path.

Located in Assam—the gateway to India’s North-East—IIM Guwahati is uniquely positioned amidst a region renowned for its rich cultural heritage, biodiversity, strategic geographical importance, and immense economic potential. The North-East presents exciting opportunities across sectors such as trade, services, tourism, agriculture, technology, and entrepreneurship. We envision the Institute as a catalyst for unlocking this potential by developing future-ready leaders and generating knowledge that contributes meaningfully to both regional and national development.

As a new institution mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, we have the privilege of building our culture with purpose and deliberation. We endeavour to build an institution that inspires curiosity, encourages critical thinking, promotes ethical decision-making, and fosters innovation. Our aim as a management institution is not only to impart quality management education but also to build leadership, generate knowledge, and create societal impact while remaining deeply rooted in the realities and opportunities of North-East India and connected to the world.

With this vision in mind, I warmly invite students, faculty members, researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, IIM alumni, and well-wishers to be a part of this journey. The success of a young institution is built through shared purpose and collective endeavour, and we look forward to learning, collaborating, and growing together.

Prof. Bharat Bhasker
Mentor Director, IIM Guwahati
